The Don Chiofaro show rolls on
You’ve to hand it to Don Chiofaro – this guy is no quitter.
But admirable as this damn the torpedoes approach is, I am not so sure how well it is serving Boston’s answer to Donald Trump in his showdown with Boston’s mayor-for-life.
Chiofaro upped the ante this week in his public relations campaign aimed at pressuring City Hall into giving him a green light to build a major high-rise complex next the new Greenway.
In case you missed it, Chiofaro has been locked in what I have argued in a counterproductive verbal sparring match with Mayor Thomas M. Menino in a bid to replace a ugly hulk of a parking garage next to the New England Aquarium with a pair of towers.
And this week, Chiofaro, the consummate showman developer, did not disappoint.
First came a poll commissioned by the International Place developer that claims wide support among Hub residents for his $1 billion skyrise project.
The only problem is that the residents who truly count in this – the 200 or so residents of the nearby Harbor Towers complex – are pretty skeptical of Chiofaro’s plans.
So much for the poll.
Chiofaro followed that up with a compromise proposal. Well sort of. He’s ready to reduce his proposed twin towers from over 600 feet to something closer to the city’s planned 200 height limit for new buildings along the Greenway.
But he won’t name a height, other than to say 200 feet doesn’t work.
Maybe Chiofaro really believes he is moving the mayor closer to deal – to me this looks more like someone who just can’t stop digging the hole deeper.
