Fairway Independent Mortgage, Keller Williams Realty, Clinton Savings Bank and many others are featured in this week's roundup of local banks and brokerages giving back to their communities.

 

Bay State Savings Bank

Worcester-based Bay State Savings Bank has awarded $14,000 in grants to seven local non-profit organizations through its charitable foundation. Among the recipients were Worcester East Side Community Development Corp., American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts and The Barton Center for Diabetes Education Inc.

On May 2 and 3, the bank's Auburn and Mill Street branch locations are offering free hearing screenings, provided by licensed and certified audiologists from Worcester State University's Speech-Language-Hearing Center.

 

Berkshire Bank

Berkshire Bank has recognized six employees with its Volunteer of the Year Award.  Award recipients were selected based on their volunteerism and service to nonprofit organizations through both bank-sponsored volunteer projects and individual service.  Each winner received $500 to award to a nonprofit of his or her choice.  The award winners were as follows: 

• Heidi Higgins, assistant vice president and branch officer in Pittsfield, Mass. - Donation made to: Berkshire County Goodwill's Suit Yourself Program

• Jean Deschaine, branch manager in South Hadley, Mass. - Donation made to: Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Pantry

• Jerry Gaudette, assistant vice president and branch officer in West Hartford, Conn. - Donation made to: The Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society

• Sheila Hudder, assistant branch manager in Albany, N.Y. - Donation made to: Capital City Rescue Mission in Albany, N.Y.

• Mary Chmielewski, assistant vice president and branch officer in Rome, N.Y. - Donation made to: YWCA of the Mohawk Valley to support Lucy's House in Rome, N.Y.

• Leslie Lever, branch manager in Ludlow, Vt. - Donation made to: Fletcher Memorial Library

 

Bridgewater Savings Bank

Bridgewater Savings Bank and the Bridgewater Savings Bank Charitable Foundation has donated $6,500 to the YMCA's annual Support Campaign, which ensure all children and families have access to the YMCA's programs.

 

Bristol County Savings Bank

Bristol County Savings Bank, through its foundation, has awarded grants totaling $40,000 to seven New Bedford area nonprofits. Recipients included:

• Caritas Communications Inc. ($2,500)

• Horizons for the Homeless ($2,500)

• Nativity Preparatory School ($10,000)

• New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! ($5,000)

• New Bedford Festival Theatre ($5,000)

• Schwartz Center for Children ($12,500)

• Veteran's Transition House of Southeastern Massachusetts ($2,500)

 The bank has also given a grant of $12,500 to the Schwartz Center for Children.

 

Clinton Savings Bank

Clinton Savings Bank has enlisted Jocelyn Orangio and Alexis Carvalho, both juniors at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlborough, to produce and edit a video spotlighting bank's student recognition program, CSB Champions.

The bank has also awarded Assabet's Design and Visual Communications Department with a donation of $500, as well as two $250 scholarships for Orangio and Carvalho.

 

Fairway Independent Mortgage

Fairway Independent Mortgage's Newton branch awarded donations of up to $1,000 to several local organizations. Recipients included:

  • HomeStart, Inc.
  • Brookline and Newton Food Pantries
  • Birthday Wishes
  • The Natick Education Foundation
  • Jeff's Place
  • South End Baseball Little League
  • South Shore Young Professionals Foundation
  • Rutland Youth Soccer program

 

Greylock Federal Credit Union

Pittsfield-based Greylock Federal Credit Union held its sixth Community Shred Day on April 26. The credit union shredded nearly seven tons of paper at the event and raised $1,088 in donations to the Berkshire United Way. Greylock Federal Credit Union suggested a $1 donation per box from people looking to dispose of personal documents.

 

Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union

Fourteen employees from Lowell-based Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union participated in Rebuilding Together Lowell on April 26. The group helped repair and rehabilitate the home of an elderly couple on Hoyt Avenue in Lowell.

 

Keller Williams Realty

Keller Williams Realty sponsored the Harvard Extension Business Society Pitch Competition at Harvard's Science Lecture Hall in Cambridge on April 26.  The event spotlights start-ups in the early stages of development.

 

MutualOne Bank

The MutualOne Charitable Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to the Golden Tones Chorus. The grant will support the group's plans for 10 to 15 concerts to be performed this year at senior health and housing facilities in Natick and Framingham.

 

Needham Bank

The Needham Farmers Market, sponsored by Needham Bank, on April 25 kicked off its third season at its new downtown location in the municipal parking lot behind Needham Bank located off of Garden Street. The market will run every Sunday from 12 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. through Nov. 23.
