As I sat here during the recent Memorial Day weekend, thinking of some of my own friends and relatives who have given their lives in defense of what we often refer to as our way of life, I was caught in an awkward ambivalence between wanting to believe these deaths were all worth the sacrifice, and uncertainty about what we are doing to honor their sacrifice within the world we inhabit daily.
