Communities in the commonwealth have two choices: Choose where to put affordable housing, or let affordable housing choose them by way of Chapter 40B projects. The town of Boxboro has decided to take the housing bull by the horns and determine how best to meet the state’s 10 percent affordable housing mandate.
Altered State
A recent report released by the Harvard Center for Joint Housing Studies reveals good news and bad news in the Bay State’s residential market. The study, called the State of the Nation’s Housing, examined the current national condition and also honed in and assessed various regions including Greater Boston and other Massachusetts metro areas.

In December 1996, then-Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan delivered a speech before the American Enterprise Institute. These words became his most famous observation on the booming securities market: “[B]ut how do we know when irrational exuberance has unduly escalated asset values, which then become subject to unexpected and prolonged contractions? We, as central bankers, need to be concerned if a collapsing financial asset bubble does not threaten to impair the real economy, its production, jobs and price stability.”

A Key to Homelessness Prevention

I recently announced the launch of the Boston Homelessness Prevention Clearinghouse. This is a three-year, $2 million partnership between the city of Boston and the Paul and Phyllis Fireman Charitable Foundation geared toward providing better services to our city’s homeless population.
