The Place of Contemporary Art in Boston and Its Sea Change

No matter how lovely the ocean view, the new Institute for Contemporary Art at 100 Northern Ave. in South Boston does not score any design points for how it greets visitors approaching from the city.

Thirty-two years ago, Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art rescued an abandoned but historic Boylston Street police station. The ICA hired Graham Gund, the young Cambridge architect and art collector, to remodel its interior, and then opened shop.
