Eleven companies are vying to build a hotel and mixed-use development across from the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on a vacant parcel owned by Massport.

After Gov. Charlie Baker put a $1 billion expansion of the convention center project on hold last spring, Massport scaled back previous plans for a 1,200-room “headquarters” hotel. In November, the port authority sought qualifications from developers for a mixed-use project including a 250-room hotel, retail space and complementary uses such as office space on the Summer Street parcel, known as D-2.

Three development teams that previously submitted proposals for the headquarters hotel have been certified by Massport as qualified for the latest project, Massport spokesman Matthew Brelis said: The Fallon Co./Capstone Development LLC, New Boston Hospitality LLC/Omni Hotels and Resorts and RIDA Development/Accordia Partners.

Additionally, eight new teams responded to the recent RFQ, which was due on Dec. 21: The Drew Co., Hyatt Hotels Corp., Norwich Partners, Peebles Corp., Pembroke Real Estate Inc., Pritzker Realty Group, Tishman Speyer Worldwide LLC and Waterford Hotel Group.

Massport will issue a request for proposals in February with the goal of selecting a developer by late June, Brelis said.

Hotel and multifamily projects continue to fill in the former vacant parcels surrounding the 2.1-million-square-foot convention center including the Element and Aloft Hotels developed by CV Properties and Ares Management on D Street.
