The state legislature’s Transportation Committee isn’t the only legislative panel that will hear from Baker administration transportation officials this month.

As Rep. William Straus and Sen. Joseph Boncore’s committee prepares for a July 22 oversight hearing on Registry of Motor Vehicles failures, the House Committee on Bonding has called state transportation officials, including the MBTA, in for a July 23 oversight hearing on capital spending.

In the face of systemic problems, Gov. Charlie Baker is trying to accelerate capital spending at the MBTA, and has asked lawmakers to allocate $50 million to help with that effort.

Like frustrated riders, many lawmakers are concerned about the pace of MBTA improvements under Baker’s watch. Baker has resisted calls for new revenues to further boost transportation spending and says the state is already making record investments.

The Bonding Committee is chaired by Rep. Antonio Cabral of New Bedford, where the state plans to expand commuter rail service, and its members include many lawmakers representing communities served by the MBTA.
