Springfield-based Freedom Credit Union has expanded its field of membership to include Hartford and Tolland counties in Connecticut. These counties join the current membership of four western Massachusetts counties.

“Expanding our field membership to include both of these Connecticut counties, which are just across the state line, makes sense,” Freedom Credit Union’s President and CEO Glenn Welch said in a statement. “They are so close geographically, and we wanted to provide people who live, work and attend school there, the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of becoming a part of the Freedom family. This expansion also allows businesses in those counties to take advantage of our extensive business products and services.”

Originally chartered as the Western Massachusetts Telephone Workers Credit Union in 1922, Freedom Credit Union was renamed in 2004. Membership is open to people who live, work, or attend school in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin or Berkshire counties in Massachusetts, as well as Hartford and Tolland counties in Connecticut.

Freedom Credit Union has total assets of more than $492 million and branches in Chicopee, Easthampton, Feeding Hills, Greenfield, Ludlow, Northampton, Turners Falls, West Springfield and three in Springfield, including the Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy branch.
