What: Akamai headquarters
Where: 145 Broadway, Cambridge
Owner: Boston Properties
Built: 2017-2019

Akamai has opened its new 19-story, 480,000-square-foot headquarters in Cambridge’s Kendall Square following a more than $100 million interior buildout.

Designed by architects Sasaki, the project is highlighted by “The Akamile,” a mile-long connective pathway leading from the 2-story lobby to top floor. Providing conference rooms, game rooms and dining areas, the Akamile is intended to encourage collaboration as well as quiet individual workspaces. Colors and varying furniture styles distinguish between areas designed for socialization and seclusion.

To promote employee wellness, over 70 percent of workspaces are located within 20 feet of windows, and workstations are equipped with sit-to-stand desks. A rooftop solar array will provide 82,000 kilowatt hours per year of electricity, and heating and cooling systems feature efficient chilled beam technology.

The project consolidates Akamai’s office space previously spread across six local properties.

They Said It:

“The vision for the project was ‘to connect the world, we must first connect to each other’, and the Akamile provides a unique opportunity for the Akamai workforce to stay connected to one another across all 19 floors of the building. The Akamile design concept provides a mix of social, focused, and collaborative spaces, allowing Akamai employees to do their best work.”
