Dorchester has begun to emerge as competition for North Quincy, with Nordblom Co. marketing nearly 700,000 square feet of office, lab and manufacturing space at The Beat, its redevelopment of the former Boston Globe headquarters.

What: The BEAT

Where: 135 Morrissey Blvd.

Owner: Nordblom Co.

Built: 1958

  • Burlington-based developer Nordblom Co. has filed plans to redevelop the Boston Globe’s former 16-acre property in Dorchester as “The BEAT (Boston Exchange for Accelerated Technology),” reconfiguring the 695,000-square-foot building as a multitenant space for the tech, life science and advanced manufacturing sectors.
  • In addition to office space, The BEAT will add a fitness center and food hall, including a possible brewpub. The floor plan for the new facility capitalizes on the building’s existing layout, which includes dramatic high ceilings and large, open floor plates with ample natural light.
  • Pending approval by the Boston Planning and Development Agency, construction will begin this summer.
  • The Globe building was first constructed in 1958 and expanded several times throughout the years. The newspaper sold the building and moved its newsroom and business operations to 53 State St. in downtown Boston and its printing facilities to Taunton in 2017.

“We are creating a high-energy destination for workers that will be pulsing with activity. This approach will create local jobs and business opportunities, while optimizing tax revenues for the city. We expect The BEAT to be a highly desirable and bustling campus with abundant open space and adjacency to UMass Boston, with easy access to the MBTA Red Line.”
