Peter Muise

Peter Muise will retire as president and CEO of Fairhaven-based First Citizens’ Federal Credit Union. The credit union’s current chief operating officer, Christopher Howard, will step in immediately as president and become CEO early next year.

Muise has been at First Citizens’ for 24 years. Under his leadership, First Citizens’ has seen significant asset and member growth, the credit union said in a statement. He has received numerous awards and accolades recognizing the positive impact he has made throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.

“Peter’s dedication in specifically supporting education, homelessness and the arts and culture will leave a lasting impact on many,” Jeff Riley, chairman of the board, said in a statement.

Muise will remain on First Citizens’ board of directors when he retires on Jan. 26. He is also currently board chairman for the Housing Assistance Corporation on Cape Cod and an executive committee member of the Homeless Service Providers Network in New Bedford.

“On behalf of the board, senior management and team members of First Citizens’ Federal Credit Union, I want to thank Peter for his years of service and the leadership role that has made First Citizens’ the exceptional organization it is today,” Riley said. “Peter’s contributions to the credit union and the community will always be valued and are worthy of admiration. We wish him a happy, healthful and well-deserved retirement.”

Howard has eight years of experience in several capacities at the credit union, including most recently as first executive vice president and COO.

“Like Peter, Chris shares a passion for this organization, our team members, members and the communities we serve,” Riley said. “We look forward to continued success under his leadership.”

First Citizens’ has over 80,000 members and $849 million in assets, with offices in New Bedford, Raynham, Taunton, Mattapoisett, Wareham, Falmouth, Mashpee, Hyannis, Orleans, Hanover and a lending office in Plymouth.
