While waiting for state gambling regulators to decide if it can keep the Boston-area casino license, Wynn Resorts has given away $1 million nine to local nonprofits and the city of Everett.

According to Commonwealth Magazine, the operator of the Encore Boston Harbor casino gave the money over the last two weeks to groups including the Museum of Fine Arts in an apparent bid to influence the state Gaming Commission’s decision.

“I think any other company (or CEO) would place a hold on these until they had final resolution, regardless of what commitment they had made to the community,” a Wynn Resorts spokesman told Commonwealth in an email. “Although a great deal has been written about ‘leadership’ post-hearing, I believe this, in part, is what community leadership looks like.”

The Gaming Commission wrapped up hearings two weeks ago about allegations Wynn Resorts helped cover up allegations of sexual assault and other misdeeds by its former CEO Steve Wynn. The commission’s decision-making timeline is still uncertain.

“We will take our time in making a decision,” Chairwoman Cathy Judd-Stein said at the conclusion of the commission’s hearing on the Wynn matter.
