A new player is arriving on the local commercial real estate scene, and they have hired a top local development executive to kick-start their Boston presence.

Dallas-based real estate developer and investor Trammell Crow Co. has hired Skanska USA Commercial Development Executive Vice President Charles Leatherbee to head its new Boston office.

Leatherbee was previously regional manager for Skanska and headed its Boston unit, responsible for the day-to-day operations, including setting business strategy and financial targets and sourcing new deals. He led a team of real estate professionals developing nearly 2 million square feet of commercial developments and more than $1 billion of life science, office and multifamily property throughout Greater Boston. Throughout his 21-year real estate career, he also held various roles at Commonwealth Ventures and Boston Properties.

Skanska announced Tuesday morning Russell DeMartino would take Leatherbee’s place as executive vice president its Boston operations. DeMartino joined Skanska in 2016 and brings 16 years of experience to his new role. Since joining Skanska, he led the 121 Seaport team from the complete lease-up of the speculative office development project to its record-breaking $455 million sale.

In conjunction with the move, Skanska also promoted Carolyn Desmond to vice president-development for the Boston office. With 15 years of experience, including nine at Skanska in its Boston, Washington, D.C. and Warsaw, Poland offices, Desmond has managed all aspects of the development process including acquisition, financing, design development, construction oversight, leasing and divestment, most recently on the 121 Seaport project in Boston.

At TCC Leatherbee will be responsible for all development and acquisition projects, including sourcing new principal and fee opportunities, financial structuring and the overall day-to-day operations of the office. His team will build a multi-product business in the office, multifamily, life sciences and industrial sectors. Leatherbee will hold the title of senior vice president and report to Jeff Goggins, senior managing director of TCC’s Northeast office.

Leatherbee sits on NAIOP’s Boston Board Management Committee, serves as an Advisory Board Member for ULI New England, sits on the board of directors for A Better City and is a member of the Commercial Brokers Association.
