University of Massachusetts Lowell has opened its new Innovation Hub coworking and research space in Lowell’s Hamilton Canal District.

The center also will offer expert assistance for entrepreneurs and startups in the medical device and tech sectors.

The four-story building was redeveloped by Boston-based Trinity Financial in its role as former master developer of the 15-acre district. UMass leased the building from Trinity and will occupy 11,000 square feet.

The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center also is expanding to the building from the Wannalancit Business Center in Lowell and will occupy 11,000 square feet. The center is a joint venture by the UMass Lowell and Worcester campuses and has worked with more than 100 startups that have raised more than $40 million in funding, according to a press release.

The project was supported by a $4 million Massachusetts Life Sciences Center grant, $2.8 million from UMass Lowell to cover five years of operations and $1 million in capital funding approved last year by former Gov. Deval Patrick.

The Innovation Hub also will become part of the Workbar network of coworking centers. Through a partnership, iHub members will be able to use Workbar’s flagship locations in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville. Conversely, Workbar’s 800 members from 500 companies will now have access to to iHub’s facilities and amenities, including a fully-equipped makerspace, access to UMass Lowell engineering, prototyping and business resources, design and manufacturing partners and a fabrication lab.

The UMass Lowell Innovation Hub is Workbar’s second university collaboration, following its 2013 partnership with the Framingham State University Entrepreneur Innovation Center.

Founded in 2009, Workbar operates three coworking centers and nine regional network spaces in Greater Boston.
