Bank Robbery Suspect John Soule

An Abington man who allegedly stole over $58,000 from three different bank branches in Boston was charged Friday in U.S. District Court.

U.S. Magistrate Judge M. Page Kelley charged John Soule, 52, on three counts of bank robbery, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Court documents show that from July through September, Soule allegedly took $12,940 from the Eastern Bank branch on Alewife Parkway in Cambridge, $3,137 from the Webster Bank branch on Franklin Street in Boston and $42,474 from a Rockland Trust branch on Quincy Avenue in Quincy.

In each scenario, Soule, wearing a hat, sunglasses and gloves, entered the bank, jumped over the teller counter and made verbal demands for the bank’s money, according to court documents.

Following the robberies, the Federal Bureau of Investigation Violent Crimes Task Force posted surveillance photos of the robber on the MassMostWanted website, which is sponsored by the Massachusetts Bankers Association to help apprehend bank robbers.

Through the website, according to court documents, a witness submitted a tip, saying he thought the suspect was Soule, who he had known for 20 years and had worked with at Troup Waste Services.

Following information from other witnesses, the FBI was able to conclude that Soule was indeed the suspect in the robberies.

Following Soule’s initial appearance, Kelley ordered Soule detained and scheduled a probable cause and detention hearing for Oct. 5, 2017.

The charge of bank robbery provides for a sentence of no greater 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
