While Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has, citing public health concerns, brought all construction projects to a halt in his city, Gov. Charlie Baker said yesterday he has no plans for a similar move statewide.

“I’m never going to say never to anything when it comes to this but we have no plans at this point to shut down construction statewide,” Baker said at a press conference yesterday.

Walsh made his declaration Monday afternoon, saying it was necessary to halt the spread of the coronavirus but blindsiding the construction and development industries. There are roughly 130 projects around the city in various stages of construction, according to city permit data. Walsh’s declaration gives workers until Monday to make their sites safe.

The region’s council of building trades unions said it supported the measure, which will likely put tens of thousands of the roughly 162,000 construction workers in Greater Boston out of work, but the move has raised the specter that some projects in process could lose their financing.
