Redevelopment of a commercial property near the birthplace of John F. Kennedy will generate 24 new apartments, including six income-restricted units.

Kaplan Construction demolished a 3-story commercial building at 420 Harvard St. and has begun construction of JFK Crossing, a 3-story, 42,000-square-foot multifamily building scheduled for completion in August 2019.

The Embarc Studio-designed project includes a pair of ground-floor retail spaces, 24 underground parking spaces, bicycle parking and a patio. Units range from studios to three-bedrooms.

To facilitate construction on the 10,852-square-foot lot, Brookline-based Kaplan Construction shored up a neighboring single-family home and partially removed the foundation to construct the underground garage, and reinforced the foundation of the Butcherie kosher grocery store at 428 Harvard St., which will remain open during construction.

Developer Aura Properties acquired the property in November 2015 for $3.6 million. Other members of the project team include Hayes & O’Neill Structural Engineering, BLW Engineering and McKenzie Engineering Group.
