Amid a debate over the future of Boston’s marine park, mechanical contractor Cannistraro is making the argument that industrial companies still have a place in the neighborhood.

Its new manufacturing and fabrication plant at 25 Fid Kennedy Ave. will enable the company to save hundreds of thousands of dollars annually on transportation-related costs, President John Cannistraro said. The FID (Fabrication, Industry and Design) building replaces facilities in Stoughton, Wilmington and Watertown.

Cannistraro is doing more of its mechanical jobs in Boston than ever during the city’s historic building boom, and the 157,000-square-foot facility brings together its plumbing, HVAC and fire protection divisions under one roof.

After an 18-month renovation project, Cannistraro officially opened the FID on Friday.

“This is prime location for a pipe shop. It’s just phenomenal to have this beautiful location here,” Cannistraro said. “It’s meant to provide opportunities for blue-collar tradespeople. That’s why we moved it into the city.”

Cannistraro leases the former World War II-era machine shop, which had been vacant for decades, from the Economic Development and Industrial Corp. of Boston. Approximately 100 employees now work at the FID, which provides space for off-site fabrication and assembly of building components used in new commercial and multifamily developments.

Efficiencies in lean building techniques enable the company to assemble components using less space, and the structure is big and flexible enough to bring in other companies to collaborate on specific projects, Cannistraro said. The company continues to occupy a 70,000-square-foot office headquarters and warehouse in Watertown.

The Boston Planning and Development Agency is studying a new master plan for the 191-acre Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park, including new zoning that would loosen requirements for marine industrial uses. Demand for industrial space has declined in recent decades, and major developers such as Related Beal and The Davis Cos. have acquired marine park properties with an eye to replicating Jamestown’s success attracting Reebok and other tenants to its Innovation and Design Building.
