Citizens Bank has named Boston one of its four tech hubs and plans to hire “hundreds” of software engineers to staff them in the coming years.

Citizens is establishing technology hubs in Boston, Rhode Island, Charlotte, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee, the bank said in a statement announcing a “hackathon” at District Hall in Boston’s Seaport neighborhood on Oct. 4.

CIO Michael Ruttledge said the company is hoping to “connect with top software engineering talent from across the country to provide next-generation solutions for our customers” at the hackathon.

“We have built the essential foundation for innovation at the bank by fostering a culture that prioritizes digital-savvy talent, development and continuous improvement. Our objective is to deliver exceptional end-to-end customer experiences by using the most innovative solutions,” he added.

A spokesperson for Citizens declined further comment on the specific size and location of any specific, Boston-area expansions.
