Following the lead of Boston and Cambridge, the town of Walpole has ordered a shutdown of major construction sites in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Building Commissioner Michael Yanovitch ordered a limit of 10 workers per job site for safety and housekeeping only, and said the town’s building department will only conduct exterior inspections for building, plumbing/gas and electric permits.

“We fully understand the inconvenience and none of these decisions are made without the thought of the effects,” Yanovitch wrote in a memo to contractors, developers and owners.

On Monday, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh ordered the state’s first ban on most construction sites, and Cambridge officials followed suit on Wednesday.

Walsh’s order does not apply to projects for health care facilities that support “vulnerable populations.” In an attempt to clarify what it called “vague” guidelines in Walsh’s order, trade group Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts issued an advisory to members

“We think we can assume that all work on health care facilities supports vulnerable populations. In addition, we have heard that the MBTA and Mass. Highway do not consider their agencies or their projects covered under the mayor’s ban,” AGC wrote.

It advised members to contact the inspectional services department with questions about specific projects.
