A Los Angeles private equity firm is the new owner of Boston’s Copley Square Hotel, paying $66 million for the Back Bay landmark.

Hawkins Way Capital acquired the 47 Huntington Ave. property from MassMutual’s Barings unit, the owner since 2013.

JLL Boston marketed the 143-room, 74,214-square-foot property built in 1891 as a “rare opportunity to acquire a historic hotel” in the high-barrier-to-entry Back Bay submarket, receiving demand from leisure travelers, local universities and corporate and convention business. The property received multiple competitive offers, JLL Managing Director Denny Meikleham said.

In recent years Hawkins Way Capital has acquired two other properties in Boston, the former Milner Hotel at 76-82 Charles St., and 12 Hemenway St. in the Fenway, and converted them into its Found brand of hostel-style hotels containing a mix of private and shared rooms.
