EMD Serono Set for $70M Billerica Expansion

EMD Serono will expand its Billerica research and development complex with a new $70 million, 145,000-square-foot office and lab complex scheduled to open in 2021.

The project will include wet labs, collaborative office space and a cafeteria, EMD Serono said in a statement released Wednesday. Approximately 400 existing and new Serono employees will be based at the new facility.

The U.S. biopharma division of Merck KGaA, EMD Serono opened the 140,000-square-foot Billerica office and lab complex in 2011 and completed a $12 million, 30,000-square-foot expansion in 2016.

The project brings Merck’s investments in Massachusetts up to $150 million, with more than 150 jobs added in Billerica since 2011. The new project will target LEED and WELL building certifications.
