Fitchburg-based IC Federal Credit Union went outside the industry for its next leader, naming Chris Hendry as its new president and CEO.

Hendry was most recently the senior director of external affairs for UMass Memorial Health Alliance-Clinton Hospital, where he provided strategic direction for the marketing, communication, philanthropic and community-benefits programs, IC Federal Credit Union said in a statement.

He replaces Anthony Emerson, who left IC in June. Philip Richards has been serving as IC’s interim leader.

“During this important moment in time, we are very fortunate to have someone with Chris’ leadership experience directing the operations of the credit union,” Norman Gariepy, IC’s board chair, said in the statement.

Hendry has been a member of IC’s board of directors and supervisory committee since 2014.

“Chris has a solid understanding of all facets of the credit union’s operations and has leadership skills that will allow us to successfully implement our strategies and take advantage of future opportunities,” Gariepy said. He added: “The entire board of directors is looking forward to working together with Chris and his senior leadership team, and we would like to thank all our outstanding employees for their continued support and dedication to the mission and values of IC Federal Credit Union.”

Hendry has been on the boards of several local organizations, including NewVue Communities, the Arc of Opportunity and the Fitchburg Art Museum.

“I am excited to be working at this fantastic organization and honored that I have been chosen for this role,” Hendry said in the statement. “I am looking forward to working with the senior leadership team and the entire staff in advancing our mission to our membership and our community.”

IC Federal Credit Union has about $556 million in assets, and its field of membership includes Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Norfolk and Worcester counties.
