Homeowners insurance in Massachusetts is slightly cheaper than the national average according to analysis released yesterday by Insurance.com.

The average cost of a homeowners insurance policy on a $200,000 home with $100,000 liability and a $1,000 deductible in Massachusetts is $1,190 per year. That’s 3 percent lower than the national average of $1,228.

That same policy in Florida, the most expensive state in the country, would be $3,575, nearly twice the national average. In Hawaii, the least expensive state, it would cost $337, which is 73 percent below the national average.

The report said there are a number of things homeowners can do to reduce their premiums.

“Insurers review many factors when calculating your home insurance rate,” the report said. “Some of these variables are beyond your control, but you do have some influence over how much you pay for home insurance. By pricing other insurers every few years at least, choosing a higher deductible, making sure you get all the discounts that you can and not filing too many claims, you can do your part to get the lowest insurance rates possible for your home.”
