The former South Weymouth Naval Air Station has been renamed by its master developer, LStar Communities, as Union Point.

The 1,400-acre property spanning portions of Abington, Rockland and Weymouth was renamed Southfield by a previous developer, LNR Property Corp., after it took the lead in the long-delayed redevelopment effort. LStar bought the property last year from Starwood Property Trust.

The property is zoned for up to 6 million square feet of commercial development along with 3,900 residential units. The site attracted interest by General Electric last year when it began looking for a new global headquarters, according to emails obtained by MassLive.com under a public records request.

The new name reflects a commitment to union labor on construction projects, along with a historical nod to Union Street which dead-ends in Weymouth and Rockland on either side of the property, LStar Managing Partner Kyle Corkum said in a statement.

LStar hired Selbert Perkins Design of Arlington to develop the new brand identity, including a new logo and website, unionpointMA.com.
