Renters in Massachusetts think highly of the state’s public transportation, quality of life and schools, but rated it poorly in affordability and pet friendliness, according to a recent survey.

Apartment List has released Massachusetts’ results from the third annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey, which draws on responses from over 45,000 renters and provides insight on what states and cities must do to meet the needs of 111 million American renters nationwide.

“Massachusetts renters expressed general satisfaction with the state overall,” according to a statement from Apartment List. “They gave most categories average or near average scores.”

Key findings in Massachusetts include:

  • The highest-rated categories for Massachusetts were public transit (A); safety and low crime rate, social life and quality of local schools all received an A-.
  • The areas of concern to Massachusetts renters are affordability and pet-friendliness, which both received a D.
  • Millennial renters are moderately satisfied with their state, giving it an overall rating of B-, while renters who are parents are equally satisfied, also giving it a B-.
  • Massachusetts earned similar scores to other New England states, including New York (C) and New Hampshire (C+), but earned higher marks than Connecticut (D) and Vermont (D).
  • Massachusetts did relatively poorly compared to other states nationwide, including California (A-), North Carolina (A-) and Florida (B+).
