Urbanization may be the hot trend in the headlines, but not everyone wants to live in downtown Boston. Between the urban hub and the green fields of the suburbs is a compromise – the nation’s small cities. Six Massachusetts cities appear on personal finance website WalletHub’s most recent list of the top 20 best small cities in America, the most of any state.

Milton, Needham, Newton, Arlington, Melrose and Wellesley did not score particularly high in the categories of home affordability or restaurants per capita, but the Massachusetts cities had almost a clean sweep in the category of most residents insured.

WalletHub compared more than 1,200 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 based on 40 key indicators of livability, ranging from housing costs to school-system quality to restaurants per capita. The study followed recently released U.S. Census Bureau data showing that suburban population growth outpaced city growth in 2017.
