The Newton-Needham Regional Chamber has received a $25,000 grant from the Massachusetts Collaborative Workspace Program to help the Newton Innovation Center (NIC) find a new home after outgrowing its current space.

Founded in 2015 to encourage tech job growth in the suburbs, the NIC provides co-working space for 70 business people daily but has limited parking and event space. The center is a partnership between the city of Newton, the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) and the chamber.

“The NIC’s current home at the former Newton Center Library at Newton Corner is pushed to its limits while still more entrepreneurs want to take advantage of the community developing there,”  Newton-Needham Regional Chamber President Greg Reibman said in a statement.

The grant will pay for a site search, buildout costs and a developing an operating model, Reibman said.

The grant was one of two awarded to Newton organizations. Empow Studios received $90,000 to build a virtual reality and augmented reality lab at its new Needham Street headquarters.

The Collaborative Workspace Program is through the Baker-Polito administration and is managed by MassDevelopment. The grants were among $2.2 million awarded to 28 organizations statewide in the third round of the program.
