After expanding to a new 275,000-square-foot headquarters in Boston’s Back Bay last year, online furniture retailer Wayfair is back in the market for up to 150,000 square feet of additional office space.

Wayfair has indicated a preference to grow in Back Bay, according to real estate sources. The company has more than 2,000 employees in Boston, nearly doubling its local headcount in the past two years.

When it relocated to Simon Property Group’s Offices at Copley Place last year, Wayfair initially leased 105,000 square feet but signed on for an additional 170,000 square feet to accommodate its rapid expansion prior to its occupancy in June. Previously it occupied 60,000 square feet at 177 Huntington Ave.

At the time, Wayfair said the 845,000-square-foot Copley Place office tower offered expansion options. A spokeswoman this week declined to comment on potential real estate decisions.

Wayfair recently reported 2015 net revenues of $2.25 billion, up nearly 71 percent from the previous year. The company had 3,809 employees worldwide as of Dec. 31.

Wayfair’s growth would moderate a recent uptick in vacancies in the 12.3 million-square-foot Back Bay office market, which remains the home to Boston’s priciest workspaces. Total availabilities hit 19.8 percent in the first quarter, according to JLL market research. That’s the highest of any Boston submarket.

But asking rents averaged $60.75 per square foot, up nearly 10 percent from the first quarter of 2015.
